Puppy Resources

Adopting a puppy is a great adventure, and like every adventure will have its challenges.  Every new puppy owner has questions - lots of them.  We did!

On this page, our family would like to offer advice, tips, and ideas about things we have found to be helpful.  (Our daughter helped a lot with this!)  Some of them are ideas we learned from other people, and some of them are things we have learned from our own mistakes.

We will organize our thoughts under 3 headings: Supplies, Care and Potty Training.

Supplies

Having the right tools makes every job better and easier.  This is certainly true when caring for a puppy.  Here are a few things that you will need.

  • Puppy Crate - This will be your puppy's "safe place."  It needs to be large enough for the puppy to rest comfortably but not too large or the puppy will be more likely to go potty in it.

  • Bowls for food and water - The options here are many.  Make sure it will hold enough so you aren't filling it all the time, low enough that puppy can reach it easily, and sturdy enough that puppy won't tip it over.  (We learned this!)

  • Collar, leash, and chain/cable - The collar should be tight enough as to not easily slip off but not too tight as to restrict breathing and swallowing.
